Caregivers & Mesothelioma

Caregiving is an important job that can make a difference in your loved one’s fight against mesothelioma. Learning how to balance your life with the needs of your loved one is the key to doing your best as a caregiver. With all the treatments, tests, and uncertainty, mesothelioma is a difficult diagnosis for anyone, including caregivers. Caregiving can be a daunting task no matter the patient's diagnosis; however, caring for a mesothelioma patient can be more taxing since there is no known cure for mesothelioma.  As the primary source of support for your loved one during this time, it is important for your sake and their's that you take care of yourself so that you can manage the health of your loved one.

How a caregiver can take care of self while caring for others?

We are asked this question all the time. And our answer remains "taking care of yourself while you take care of your loved one is important". As a mesothelioma caregiver, there is always uncertainty with this diagnosis. It is important for caregivers to be prepare and be strong for their patients. It is important for caregivers know how to balance their emotional and physical health with their caregiving duties.

Many studies illustrate that caregivers are susceptible to depression, anxiety, and stress. Some may even experience a decline in physical health. According to a 2012 AARP study, 17 percent of caregivers reported experiencing a downturn in their own health as a result of their caregiving duties.

To help minimize the physical and emotional "drain" as a result of your mesothelioma caregiving, it is important to be honest with yourself and acknowledge what you are experiencing, both the good and the bad. While the joys of caregiving are positive experiences, anxiety, anger, guilt, or grief are also common traits experienced by caregivers. And these feelings are ok, as they should be faced and not suppressed. Remember to lean on your colleagues, family, friends and loved ones for support, and always ask for help when you need it.
